Overcoming the Fear of Failure: Reflections from the Mind Body Spirit Festival

Last month, I had the privilege of speaking at the Mind Body Spirit Festival—and as I stood there, looking out at the crowd, I was filled with one emotion: gratitude.

Events like this are always a moment to pause for me, a chance to reflect on how far I’ve come.

When I first created Slimpod, I never dreamed it would touch the lives of over 350,000 people – or that I’d one day be nominated for an award as an author! Bonkers! ( Thank you everyone who voted and helped me pick out my outfit)

What began as a small seed of an idea has grown into something I’m deeply proud of. And I haven’t done it alone. I’m so grateful to every single one of you who’s joined me on this journey. Slimpod is, without a doubt, the thing I’m most proud of—and the people on it are the reason why.

Reflection Brings Strength

One thing I talk about often in the programme is the power of reflection. It’s easy to focus on how far we’ve got to go, especially when you’re trying to make big changes in your life. That can be completely overwhelming and make you want to curl up and hide. This is why I am always talking about chunking down your goals and celebrating your wins, they tell your brain yes I want more of this.

I know from personal experience, five or six years ago, I was terrified to do a live video. It wasn’t until lockdown that I finally pushed through that fear and went live for the first time. And now, I host three or four calls every single week—with hundreds of you joining at times. The thought of that used to make my stomach turn. And now? I absolutely love it.

The same goes for speaking on stage. My first live talk was at a health conference in Milan. I nearly cancelled—I was so worried I’d forget my lines or freeze on stage. That fear of failure almost stopped me.

But I did it and I’m so glad I did. Because since then, the opportunities have grown and so has my confidence. I was even having fun on stage at the mind body festival!

Meeting the Slimpod Community

At the Mind Body Spirit Festival, I was joined on stage by two amazing Slimpodders, Tracy and Susan, who bravely shared their stories. It takes courage to stand up and speak your truth in front of others, and I want to say a heartfelt thank you to them.

I was also delighted to meet so many other Slimpodders who came to say hello and share their experiences. Getting to know you is, without a doubt, my favourite part of all of this.

The Fear That Holds Us Back

Fear of failure shows up in all sorts of ways. For many people, it hides in the background of their weight loss journey.

Sometimes we’ve tried so many times—and failed so many times—we stop ourselves before we even begin. Our subconscious says, “What’s the point? You’ll only mess it up again.”

But that fear doesn’t need to be in charge anymore.

If you’ve been feeling stuck or afraid to move forward, here are four simple things you can do to help shift that fear:

Four Tips to Move Through the Fear of Failure

  1. Acknowledge the fear
You don’t need to push it away or pretend it’s not there. Say it out loud or write it down. Naming it takes away some of its power.
  2. Break your goals into small steps
The smaller the step, the easier it is to take action. You don’t need to change everything overnight. Start with one daily intention and build from there.
  3. Look back at how far you’ve come
Even if it feels small—notice it. Did you pause before eating something mindlessly? Did you say no when you usually would’ve said yes? That’s progress.

4. Remember: failure isn’t the end—it’s part of learning
Every single success story I’ve ever heard has had bumps along the way. It’s not about getting it perfect. It’s about staying kind to yourself and keeping going.

Fear is human. But it doesn’t need to hold you back.

So whether you’re standing on stage, trying something new, or simply choosing to treat yourself with a bit more kindness today—remember this: You’re already doing more than you think. And you’re not doing it alone.
